Guilford Sound, API-Equipped Vermont Destination Studio, Offers $20K Recording Residency

As if anyone needed more incentive to visit Vermont, here’s a very powerful motivator.

The newly-constructed Guilford Sound, an API- and Neve-equipped Fran Manzella-designed facility in the southern Vermont foothills, is offering a recording residency to an emerging band or solo artist from the Northeast.

This is a package worth gunning for: The chosen artist will receive two weeks of lockout studio time this summer, housing, and a $1000 stipend — a package worth over $20,000. The application deadline is March 29th, so if 14 days of creativity in a beautiful setting sound good to you – complete with lodgings in a restored 1790’s farmhouse – we recommend you get your music on the move.

Here are more details on the studio and opportunity, as explained by Guilford Sound:

At the helm of Guilford Sound’s 500 sq. foot control room is owner Dave Snyder. For nearly two decades Snyder has been working in a studio setting, originally as a drummer for bands in and around NYC and eventually moving behind the glass to run the board in his own recording facility, Jarvis Studios. His desire to one day build a high-quality destination studio brought him back to southern Vermont — where he attended college and met his wife. After six years of planning and construction, his dream was realized with the help of the venerable team at Francis Manzella Design.

Today Guilford Sound offers a retreat-like setting on over 300 acres of private woodlands, where musicians can avoid distraction and focus on crafting their music. The facility’s roof-mounted solar array, ground-source heat pumps and high-performance windows highlight the energy efficient initiatives employed to lessen the studio’s footprint. The studio boasts four spring-floated isolation booths, an extensive gear list and a modern design that provides superior sound quality and control room accuracy.

From August 18- September 1, 2013, Guilford Sound will host an unsigned northeast band or solo artist for a two-week recording residency, providing 12 ten-hour days of studio time, housing, and a $1000 stipend.

“As a former player in a number of unsigned projects, I know how valuable it would have been to spend two unencumbered weeks in a professional studio to really hone our songs and to develop our sound,” says Snyder.

Interested musicians from New England, Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania may submit an application and music samples for consideration by March 29th, 2013. A winner will be chosen in-house and announced in late May.

Artist accommodations will be provided on-site in a recently restored 1790’s five-bedroom farmhouse just down the hill from the studio. Work has begun on a new modern housing facility being built directly into the Vermont landscape that will easily accommodate up to 12 people. In keeping with their quest to minimize impact, the new passive solar building will be high performance, with three sides underground and topped with a living roof. This five-bedroom facility is currently under construction and should be ready for artists by fall of 2013.
