Premier Studios Debuts Rebuilt Steinway B 1968 Grand Piano

Along with the live room and console, one of a recording studio’s biggest assets is its piano.

Premier Studios in midtown NYC has just upped the ante with their flagship piano, following a complete rebuild of its Steinway B 7’ concert piano. Circa 1968, Premier’s Steinway was subject to a three-month overhaul which saw it outfitted with an all new soundboard, strings, bridges, tuning pin block, hammers, action, peddles, and keytops. All of the new components are genuine Steinway parts.

The instrument resides in Premier’s Studio A, which also features an SSL 9000 J.

According to Glenn Swan, Studio Director for Premier, clients that have already recorded with the refurbished Steinway include John Legend, platinum songwriting team Stargate, Windup recording artist Jillete Johnson, jazz wunderkind Beka Gochiashvili, and the renowned piano instructor Michael Chi.

“Our rebuilt piano sounds like a big Steinway should,” Swan says. “It’s a bright piano, which is great for recording, but it’s also got a big low end. As the clean, new strings gel over time this piano will sound better and better. In addition, it’s got a brand new keyboard, which has been finely tuned for technicality.

“The greatest of players are going to enjoy using this instrument,” Swan adds. “Virtuoso players that come to Premier won’t be compromising in any way – they now have an instrument commensurate with the recording they want to achieve.”
