Meyer Sound Launches Cinema Surround Loudspeaker – The HMS-15

Dedicated to the science of sound reinforcement, Meyer Sound has now added another surround loudspeaker to their existing line. According to Meyer, the self-powered HMS-15 is easily their most powerful speaker to date.

The cinematic loudspeaker joins the Berkley, CA HMS line with ideal use in Dolby Atmos and Barco Auro formats.

The cinematic loudspeaker joins the Berkley, CA HMS line with ideal use in Dolby Atmos and Barco Auro formats.

Made specifically for use in the cinematic realm, the loudspeakers are ideally suited for Dolby Atmos and Barco Auro sound formats and will do a fine job handling 5.1 and 7.1 formats.

The HMS-15 just debuted at CinemaCon 2014 in Las Vegas, March 24-27 with price TBA. Here are more details from Meyer Sound:

The HMS-15 high-power surround loudspeaker is optimized for use in cinemas, theatres, screening rooms, or any surround application or immersive cinema format. The self-powered, full-range HMS-15 maintains a wide dynamic range, exceptional fidelity, and clarity during the most demanding of digital soundtracks. As part of Meyer Sound’s EXP cinema series, the HMS-15 integrates seamlessly with Acheron screen channel loudspeakers, as well as with other HMS surround loudspeakers. Boasting a wide frequency range of 50 Hz to 18 kHz and a maximum peak SPL of 133 dB at 1 meter with very low distortion, the HMS-15 delivers the full intensity and nuance of cinema surround channels to every listener without compromise.

The HMS-15’s transducers include a 15-inch low-frequency, long-excursion cone driver and a 3-inch diaphragm high-frequency compression driver on a constant-directivity 80-degree horizontal by 50-degree vertical horn that delivers exceptional consistency. The proprietary drivers — designed and manufactured at Meyer Sound’s headquarters in Berkeley, California — are powered by two channels of onboard amplification that include an active crossover, driver protection circuitry, and correction filters for flat phase and frequency responses.

The versatile HMS-15 can be mounted on walls or ceilings at fixed or adjustable angles with the optional wall-mount brackets or U-bracket, allowing the unit to be deployed per the requirements of any surround application or immersive cinema format.

The HMS-15 requires two channels of DC power from an MPS-488HP external power supply. Powering the unit from an external source eliminates the need for wiring conduits while still preserving the advantages of self- powered, bi-amplified loudspeaker systems. For even greater flexibility, the HMS-15AC model is available for AC installations. Meyer Sound’s RMS remote monitoring system provides comprehensive monitoring of system parameters on a Mac or Windows-based computer. RMS is available for the HMS-15 via the RMS option for the MPS-488HP external power supply. RMS is available for the HMS-15AC as an onboard loudspeaker option.
