AES 139, NYC – Transaudio Group Re-Launches Auratone Reference Monitors

Originally developed by Jack Wilson in 1958, the Super Cube quickly became one of the most iconic reference monitors in the audio industry.

The original one-way, zero crossover reference monitors weren’t the most accurate or transparent on the market, but they could produce a very linear representation of whatever was pushed through them. The representation became a go-to representation for its ability to unveil red flags within a mix.

Alex Jacobsen, head of Auratone, made it a point keep the 5C un-altered from the original.

Alex Jackobson, Jack Wilson’s grandson, has now taken the helm of Auratone and his contribution to our generation of mixers and producers is the rebuilt “5C Super Sound Cube”. Alex’s goal was to produce a speaker that could offer a replicated linear response, with no attempt to alter the sound of the original. According to Brad Lunde, founder and president of TransAudio Group, Auratone’s new U.S. distributor, Alex has succeeded.

“It took a lot of time,” said Jacobsen. “I pored over box after box of my grandfather’s specs, drawings, and records. I found new suppliers in the USA and carefully tested all of the huge number of possibilities to find combinations that were repeatable and that had the exact same sound as my grandfather’s vintage Sound Cubes. Our standards are strict because these ARE Auratones, they’re not a knock-off! It was daunting, but I got help from other members of the family, including my mom, who remembers helping my grandfather in the shop in the 1970s.”

The Auratone 5C monitors will be available for $350/pair from TransAudio Group – Release date TBA. STOP BY AND SEE TRANSAUDIO GROUP AT AES NYC 2015 BOOTH #935. A pair of the Sound Cubes will be given away every day of AES 139.
