Event Alert: Gender Amplified Festival Focused On Women in Music Production, 9/28

Gender Amplified – “a movement celebrating & supporting women music producers” – is putting on a free, day-long event this weekend at Barnard College this Saturday, Sep. 28.

Starting at 12 noon and running all day with performances into the night, the Gender Amplified Festival will bring women and girls from around the U.S. to discuss the state of women in music production, how to get involved in the technical side of the music industry, and the relationship between music production and commerce.

SESAC songwriter Angela Hunte will lead a Gender Amplified workshop

GRAMMY-winning songwriter Angela Hunte will teach Music Publishing 101 (1PM).

The festival will include industry panels and workshops geared to encouraging high school and college students (and younger, see below) to get involved in music production and technology, and nighttime performances by THEESatisfactionAlluxe aka Laura Escudé (Electronic Creatives), and Genesis Be.

Workshops include Turntablism 101* with DJ Reborn, Beat Sharing Session and Open Space* with Ebonie Smith, and Music Publishing 101* with Angela Hunte (Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind” co-writer); Studio Ownership with Abhita Austin, and “The Artist/Producer: Working Both Sides of the Console” with Erica Glyn.

Another seminar “Producing Music and Media, Producing Culture: Gender Justice and the Artist/Producer Relationshiop in Hip-Hop” will be a discussion and performance with Queens MC and music producer Pri the Honeydark and Detroit artist and Emergence Media co-founder, Invincible.

The Panel Discussion “Exploring the Impact of Women in Music Production” will feature NYU Professor of Anthropology Maureen Mahon, producer/engineer Barb Morrison, engineer/mixer Angela Piva (Ghostface Killah, Mary J. Blige) and Drexel Professor of Learning Technologies, Brian Smith.

A networking reception from 5:30 – 6:30 will be followed by the three performances which will run until 11PM.
