My Mix Angle: I like cartoons and comics a lot. Old Warner Bros. Bugs Bunny cartoons had such amazing music. They could tell the story with no dialogue just music. They married perfectly. I think about mixing like that.

I listen to my instinct. What is this song making me feel? Bummed out? Happy? Angry? Then I try to make the mix feel like that emotion. If a song is angry, for example, maybe I’ll try to make something jarring and stick out to simulate what movements people make when they are pissed. When you are angry you don’t just stand there and say you’re angry, you throw shit around and punch stuff. Your movements are erratic and jarring.

For Example:

Weezer – “Mykle and Carli”

Ludo – “Whipped Cream”

Motion City Soundtrack

Hot Melts – “Edith”

At Brooklyn MixCon, I’m Focusing On Distorted Guitars in an Indie Rock Mix Because: In a rock mix, the guitars are just as much a personality as much as they are an instrument.

Sneak Preview: I’m going to explain how I think about mixing, and you could quite possibly have your own epiphany.

I Love Leading Audio Workshops Because… I enjoy inspiring people—that’s why I got into music in the first place.

Brooklyn MixCon is made possible by Soundtoys, Focal, iZotope, Universal Audio, SPL, B&H, & Eventide.
